London, Cambridge and Bletchley Park EV costs

By Gordon Fong

This is the route I took and the costs involved.

Left home with close to full tank, which I will call 74 kWh useable at 8.5p/kWh, so £6.30.

I charged at Birchanger Green Services on the M11, using Applegreen chargers. 30.76 kWh taken on. Credit card was charged £23.69. Zapmap showing 77p/kWh which adds up.

I had to do a top up charge on the way home at Fleet services, and I needed to stop and take a nap anyway as was pretty tired. There was a hailstorm, so glad I had stopped too.

Gridserve was doing a 20% discount till the end of September, so my 19.09 kWh came to £12.02, so that was 69p/kWh.

Overall it cost £42 to cover 400 miles, so it cost 10.5p per mile, for a mix of cheap home charging and on the road commercial prices. On just Octopus Go rates, assuming 3 miles per kWh, which is a low figure, each mile would cost 2.8p for journeys within one full battery.

Gone are the days of 27p per unit at the commercial chargers and I used to think that was expensive because I was paying 14p at home. I long fr those days and the 4p per unit overnight rates.
